Strategy Analytics was pleased to attend Telefonica O2's Investor Conference in London, UK, on Thursday 5th July, 2012. On day 1, multiple topics were covered, ranging from devices to networks to clouds. In devices, Telefonica O2 was especially keen to promote its intitiatives in the HTML5 space. In a nutshell, Telefonica O2 believes HTML5-enabled smartphones with the Firefox OS will be a useful counterbalance to Android in the low-end, and HTML5 Firefox can be used to accelerate entry-level smartphone adoption among prepaid users in Latin America and Western Europe. This is an interesting viewpoint from Telefonica O2 and one we will be exploring in a future report. In the meantime, I can say we broadly agree with Telefonica O2 that HTML5-based phones will be popular in the future, and global volumes will surge +365% between 2011 and 2016. More detail can be viewed in this published report, available to download by clients of our Wireless Device Strategies (WDS) service.
