In three new reports Strategy Analytics Handset Country Share Tracker service examines the Q3 2014 handset vendor landscape for three of Western Europe's most important markets.  Each of these reports provide detailed views of the leading handset vendors and how they did in terms of handset shipments, growth, and how they performed with each of the key operators in each of these countries.

The French handset market grew by +1% against the same period one year ago, in keeping with the longer-term trend of slightly sluggish growth in the country. Among the vendors Samsung and Apple retained its top two spots while Samsung went through annual handset shipments decline and Apple grew YoY. This report tracks handset vendor market share at the four major French operators -- Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom and Free Mobile -- from Q1 2009 to Q3 2014.

The German handset market shrank by -1% year-on-year in Q3 2014, continuing the longer-term trend of slightly slowing growth in the country. Among the vendors Samsung continued to retain its number one spot, but lost its annual market share a bit. Apple managed to keep its no.2 position for the eighth sequential quarter. Meanwhile Nokia, Sony and LG continued to compete for no.3 position. HTC didn't manage to grow its market share YoY while Motorola inched up its share every quarter by degrees. This report tracks quarterly handset vendor market share at the four major German operators -- T-Mobile, Vodafone, O2 and E-Plus -- from Q1 2009 to Q3 2014.

We estimate 9.1 million handsets were shipped in the UK in Q3 2014, remaining flat versus the year-ago quarter, impacted by sluggish operator subsidies and the overall growth pause of its handset markets. The UK handset market had been trending flat at best on an annual basis since 2010, and the first three quarters of 2014 experienced -1% YoY decline in spite of the deployment of next generation 4G LTE networks across the country's major operators and a general macroeconomic up-tick. This report tracks quarterly handset vendor market share at the four major UK operators -- EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three -- from Q1 2009 to Q3 2014.

Each of these reports are important tools for measuring the health of individual handset brands at the operator level.

According to the recently published 'Japan Handset Vendor Market share by Operator in Q3 2014' under our Handset Country Share Tracker (HCST) service, Apple cemented its no. 1 position at Softbank and KDDI, the Japanese second and third biggest operators, in Q3 2014 due to the influential demand of its newly-launched larger-sized iPhone 6 (4.7 inch) and iPhone 6+ (5.5 inch). Meanwhile, at NTT Docomo, the biggest operator in Japan, Sony kept the no.1 position, mainly due to strong demand for Xperia Z2, Z1 and A2. Apple, no.2 at NTT Docomo, remained lackluster in July and August, but the launch of the new iPhones in September gained robust market traction at NTT Docomo, too, closing the gap between Sony.

According to the recently published 'Global Handset Vendor Share in 15 Countries in Q3 2014', published under our Handset Country Share Tracker (HCST) service, Micromax ranks no.2 in handset market in India during Q3 2014, closing the gap against the leading vendor, Samsung. The market share difference between those two got narrowed to a record-low level in Q3 2014.

Asus, the Taiwanese handset vendor and better known for its laptop, desktop and server products, is slowly but meaningfully enhancing its handset market presence in several key countries including China, India and its home Taiwanese market based on its Zenfone and Padfone series. As this vendor is also aggressively shipping its handsets into other big markets such as Russia, Brazil, Turkey, Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand, it is expected that Asus is sure to keep up its handset market share in those countries in coming quarters.

According to the recently published Japan Handset Vendor Marketshare by Operator in Q2 2014 report under our Handset Country Share Tracker (HCST) service, Apple continued to lead the Japanese handset market across NTT-Docomo, SoftBank and KDDI with a dominating market share in Q2 2014 in spite of low seasonaility waiting for the launch of new iPhone 6. Meanwhile, Sony rose to no.1 handset vendor at NTT-Docomo, ahead of Apple, based on the robust sales of Xperia Z2 and A2 smartphones.

Two Chinese vendors, ZTE and Huawei, continued to capture the sustainable market shares at NTT-Docomo and SoftBank with their specialized feature phones for kids while Samsung increased its share sequentially based on the launch of Galalxy S5. This report is available to our paid clients here.

According to the recently-published 'Global Handset Vendor Marketshare for 15 Countries in Q2 2014' under our HCST (Handset Country Share Tracker) service, handset market competition in India is getting neck to neck among Samsung, Nokia and Micromax in Q2 2014 as Samsung and Nokia lost their market share annually, and Micromax has kept increasing its market share quarter on quarter. According to our recently published report, Global Smartphone Market Share for 15 Countries in Q2 2014, in our HCST (Handset Country Share Tracker) service, Samsung took the lead in 14 major smartphone countries in Q2 2014, including the US, China, India, Brazil, Russia and UK, despite growing pressure from lower-end to higher-tier competition. Apple followed Samsung by maintaininig the no.1 position in Japan and taking no.2 in 8 countries.

Emerging countries, such as China, India, Brazil, Mexico and Russia, continued to lead annual smartphone growth, while Huawei, Xiaomi, Micromax and TCL-Alcatel delivered solid performances across multiple markets during Q2 2014.

During this year's Google I/O event, unsurprisingly, Google announced a lot of appealing hardwares, softwares and services such as Andriod L supporting 64bit processing, Gear Live, G watch and Moto 360 smartwatches based on Android Wear, Android Auto, Android TV and Android One. These are all fantastic achievements over what Google and its partners have done for the past years. Among all these gifts from Google, it might be worth taking another look at Google Android One program, which is designed to help smartphone manufacturers design and build high-performing smartphones at lower prices under US$100 based on Stock Android. Google has been teaming up with many different device partners such as HTC, Samsung and LG to create the reference Android-powered smartphones targeting mid to high-tier price range, but this time Google decided to launch a new program to help more affordable, but high-quality smartphones available at many developing countries starting with India, under its control.

As the first step, Google is working with three Indian vendors, Micromax, Karbonn and Spice to build Android One powered smartphones for Indian market from the second half of this year. As the published report under our HCST (Handset Country Share Tracker) service tracks the smartphone market in India, these three vendors have meaningful market shares in their home country and are growing very fast based on the very small smartphone penetration in India. The Android One initiative will be likely to throw some impact on Samsung, Microsoft/Nokia, LG, Huawei, ZTE and other Chinese vendors who are also looking at the entry-tier segment in India to grow their respective market shares. We believe that it would make sense for many players to target this low-price sector in India as our report, published by WSS (Wireless Smartphone Strategies) service, estimates that this market below the wholesale price of US$99 in India is expected to account for 45% of total smartphones sold in India in 2014.

While the target market is a little lower than Android One, Mozilla is also trying to announce a few ultra-low firefox-operated smartphones at US$25 this fall under the Indian brand from Intex and Spice. Android One, Microsoft/Nokia's Nokia X/X2 project, Mozilla and other smartphone vendors equipped with affordable smartphones are going to compete fiercely neck and neck with each other for more vendor and value share in emerging markets. In a nutshell, India and the developing markets will be able to enjoy more diversity and variety when stopping by retail shops or operator channels to look for their first-time smartphones or cheaper ones from the latter half of this year.

Our Handset Country Share Tracker (HCST) service recently published the Japanese Handset Vendor Share by Operator Report for Q1 2014, and we tracked that Apple took the top spot at all three big operators, NTT Docomo, SoftBank and KDDI in Q1 2014. Apple competed with Sony, neck and neck at NTT Docomo, but demonstrated invincible performance at both SoftBank and KDDI.

It would be worth noting that ZTE, a Chinese handset maker, keeps maintaining the 3rd largest handset vendor at SoftBank since Q2 2013, based on the steady sales of its specialized feature phones for kids.
