SAIC brought its InkaNet embedded telematics system into the market earlier this year at the Beijing Auto Show under the Roewe brand. The system is now available in dealer showrooms and it is opening eyes to the possibilities around innovative telematics solutions in China and elsewhere. The ability to deliver location-aware advertising is one capability worth a closer look especially for its potential to subsidize telematics services. The InkaNet system was created with the assistance of Pateo. The founder of Pateo is also the founder of Energy Source, which is an advertising agent established in 2001. The functionality of the system, described in literature distributed in Roewe dealerships, includes a wide-range of location-relevant applications and services. While the system does not explicitly state this objective or capability, the description of the system suggests it may well be the first automotive system (in China) able to deliver location-relevant advertisements. If so, it is not unlike the service deployed in New York City cabs by Creative Mobile Technologies. Fitted for rearseat viewing by taxi passengers, the Creative Mobile Technologies solution is able to use GPS data to determine when and where ads are shown in the rearseat. The system also enables credit card payments and CMT has started to release data regarding the kinds of information passengers have requested from the system by day of the week, such as news, weather, sports, business, Zagat or People Magazine. New York’s taxi commissioner commented in a recent NYTimes article that in lieu of demanding advertising revenue, the city hoped that the additional income for vendors might encourage them to lower the fees they charge to cab owners, which could in turn reduce the pressure to increase fares. The only current player in the telematics eco-system offering the prospect of sponsored content or services is Pioneer Electronics with its Platform for Aggregation of Internet Services (PAIS). Pioneer has made clear that this social networking oriented system, enabled through a smartphone connection or an embedded module is built around a revenue sharing model unmatched in the industry. As Google and Bing bring their browser battle to the automotive segment, the opportunity for sponsored search or other subsidized content in the car is on the table. And ClearChannel’s iHeartRadio Internet radio service deal with Toyota Motor Sales could include some advertising or promotional element. It is worth noting that one of the most successful connected services delivered to cars – as measured from a profitability standpoint, is Sirius XM. Sirius and XM bought their way into dashboards which eventually led to positive cashflow. Maybe it’s time for more content and service providers to pay up. InkaNet is showing the way. At the 2010 Auto China (Beijing) show, Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) launched the InkaNet 3G Intelligent Network Travel System – an infotainment platform designed in association with the mobile telecommunications operator, China Unicom, and the mapping vendor, AutoNavi.  Similar infotainment systems in operation elsewhere include FIAT Blue&Me, Ford Sync and Kia Uvo, whereby the car interacts with a Bluetooth-enabled mobile handset, which in turns connects with the Internet (with 3G and possibly WiFi connectivity) to provide a wide range of services for the driver.  These services include:

  • Email and SMS messaging.
  • Flight, hotel and train bookings.
  • Hands-free telephone calls.
  • HMI customization.
  • Internet radio, e.g. Pandora.
  • Mobile music streamed playback.
  • Navigation directions.
  • News headlines.
  • Photo sharing, e.g. Flickr.
  • Social networking, e.g. Facebook, Twitter; 51.com, QZone, Renren in China
  • Touch screen control.
  • Tourist information.
  • Traffic information.
  • Voice control.
  • Weather updates.

InkaNet will be first deployed as an optional extra on the newly-launched Roewe 350 compact sedan.    This development is significant for a number of reasons:  This is the first deployment of the Android open source software platform in an automobile.  *Adoption of the Continental AutoLinQ system has not yet been announced publicly.  Open source software platforms offer:

  • Flexibility, thus could be in a better position to satisfy customization requirements from OEMs that wish to bring about brand differentiation from their competitors.
  • Could enable inputs from third parties, thus raising the potential for faster development, as this could have been the case in InkaNet.
  • Growing mobile handset adoption of the Android platform may encourage consumer uptake of this infotainment system.

Competing software platforms include QNX, which began to release its source codes in 2007.  This company has recently been sold to RIM, a handset manufacturer.  This is one of the earliest deployments of this type of infotainment system in China.  *Ford China has also launched its Chinese-language Sync system on its models.  In 2009, China became the world’s largest car market by unit volume sold.  According to Strategy Analytics Wireless Practice, China is also experiencing growth in 3G and smartphone handsets, as the majority of web browsing is done through mobile handsets.    Therefore, the growth potential for such infotainment systems looks promising, if offered at a reasonable price.  This could also be the case for related services and systems feeding from InkaNet, such as connectivity systems, Chinese language software and voice control systems.  The use of the handset will also lower the barrier towards the adoption of certain related systems, such as navigation, that were previously the exclusive domain of the luxury car segment.  If proven successful, future prospects for the traditional, embedded infotainment system look bleak and that automotive vendors may need to seek further developments with mobile handset connectivity.  It may also put pressure on PND players to move into mobile telephony.  This system was wholly developed by Chinese players.  While there are many global vendors already operating in this market sector – Continental (AutoLinQ), Delphi, Denso (BlueHarmony), Google (navigation on the new Audi A8), Microsoft and Visteon – it shows that even domestic players have the technical know-how to develop such an advanced system.  This means that global vendors will have to work even harder to win new business from an already increasing level of competition, such as from new players based in the emerging markets.  However, InkaNet was developed from a consortium of key domestic players (in automotive systems, mobile telephony and navigation) – highlighting the importance of collaborations in the industry.   Strategy Analytics has published an Insight report on increasing quality by Chinese domestic OEMs and the potential increase in automotive electronics demand in the Chinese market:http://www.strategyanalytics.com/default.aspx?mod=ReportAbstractViewer&a0=5501.

TomTom interrupted the epitaph writers last week with a spunky earnings call and a stunning customer presentation ushering in a new portable navigation device architecture and strategy modeled on the mobile phone market. The earnings report was significant both for the company’s ability to parry analyst skepticism and its self bestowal of the title: “fastest growing European telematics company.”

 

Skepticism surrounding TomTom’s ability to continue to grow and do so in a profitable manner was laid to rest by the Q1 2010 report which showed a 26% increase in revenue and a profit. The revenue gain came in spite of declining PND sales overall with TomTom claiming market share gains in Europe and North America.

 

The skepticism was expressed by multiple analysts on the earnings call repeatedly questioning the short- and long-term impact on TomTom of smartphone navigation. TomTom executives were quick to point out that 10M navigation application downloads, as reported by Nokia, did not directly translate into regular, daily use of smartphones for navigation.

 

TomTom’s broader survival strategy became clearer from a quick review of the earnings report which showed its non-consumer lines of business – a newly created categy – capturing 31% of revenue in Q1 ’10, up from 24% in ’09. The non-consumer segments consist of TomTom Work, licensing and the automotive business. (TomTom reports a 40% attach rate for its solution at Renault and claims 10% automotive market share as its solution is extended to additional Fiat and Renault models.)

 

TomTom Work showed 41% subscriber growth year-on-year to 104,000, well short of the 300,000 subscribers targeted for 2011, but enough to justify TomTom’s claim of being the “Fastest Growing Telematics Company in Europe.” The figure is even more important when one considers this is one of the highest gross margin businesses in TomTom’s portfolio, according to the company.

 

To round out the rosy picture TomTom pointed to the 700,000 Live Service enabled devices currently in use by consumers enabling a range of service and content transactions (including sharing of traffic and speed cam data), all of which are also exceptionally profitable to TomTom, again according to the company. With its newly announced webkit architecture strategy and adoption of the smartphone app store model (http://bit.ly/9q1jIV), TomTom hopes to build this user base.

 

An interesting note to this effort to build the TomTom user base is the fact that TomTom says it will no longer provide quarterly reports of device unit sales or average selling prices. The reason for this reticence is the company’s stated intention to alter its business model to build the base of users. Clearly TomTom is alluding to the potential for subsidizing sales of PNDs along the mobile phone model – a strategy long toyed with by the industry but never fully adopted.

 

TomTom did not specifically confirm its intention to subsidize PND sales. But this interpretation is supported by the somewhat ambiguous comments expressed in the earnings call and in the context of its plans to build its subscriber base.

 

Once TomTom has brought its open platform and app store model completely into the marketplace, expect subsidized devices, particularly among the new, simplified TomTom Ease line. The objective is to build a larger user base producing a wider range of shared location information which will become increasingly accurate (traffic) and useful (user evaluations) as the subscriber community grows.

 

TomTom’s aim is to achieve daily relevance from daily usage by a wide subscriber base. To further hedge its bets TomTom is adding new automotive relationships – such as Ford’s announced intention to use TomTom maps and content – and continuing its expansion into emerging markets (Ukraine, Morocco, Mexico, and India) where further PND growth is expected. The pieces are falling into place for Europe’s fastest growing telematics company, which has chased away the skeptics once again.

Reflecting Airbiquity’s rising star in the automotive telematics market, the company and partner Hitachi Automotive Systems, Ltd. have announced a partnership to provide telematics services for electric vehicles (EVs) globally. The announcement clearly positions Airbiquity – given its existing relationships with Toyota, Ford and OnStar – as the dominant telematics service provider of the future. The announcement emphasizes the global nature of the network and relationship between Hitachi Automotive and Airbiquity. The magnitude of this relationship is substantial, therefore, encompassing as it likely does, not only potentially the launch of the Leaf EV in North America but also perhaps lining up Airbiquity as a candidate to serve as the technology and infrastructure behind Renault-Nissan’s wider EV agenda including Europe, South America and Asia-Pacific. (Airbiquity had no comment on any potential relationship with Nissan or any other OEMs.) While Airbiquity is known for its so-called data over voice solution, the Leaf relationship is related to Airbiquity's Viaaq technology. Viaaq is serving as the back-end infrastructure for some Smart-grid implementations, paving the way for a next-generation role for Airbiquity in the telematics eco-system. The Airbiquity platform is well-suited to the task of supporting the needs of an electric vehicle to communicate vehicle location and battery charge. This relatively low bandwidth, data over voice, solution provides more than enough capacity both for battery-related information communication as well as safety and security and even eCall support. But the tie up with Hitachi is targeted at a broader IT infrastructure play. The only competing solution provider with an equivalent global footprint in telematics is WirelessCar, which already boasts relationships with Volvo Trucks, Volvo and BMW. In many ways, the WirelessCar solution represents a next generation answer to telematics service provision, emphasizing Internet protocol communications and voice-over-data technology. Where the global ambitions of Hitachi and Airbiquity may fall short is in extending the vehicle pipeline they currently offer to smart-grid applications and a deeper relationship with Nissan. The current point of leverge with Nissan derives from Hitachi Automotive's IT work in Japan in support of Nissan's telematics offerings in that country. The prospect of moving beyond "pipes to cars" and into the back-end systems represents a major leap for Airbiquity and puts the company in contention with IBM and other back-end integrators including Microsoft (Hohm) and Google. Unfortunately for Airbiquity, Ford has already announced its partnership with Microsoft for Smart-grid integration. OnStar has announced its intention to provide similar Smart-grid capabilities, but has not announced an IT partner. Hitachi and Airbiquity say their platform forms a central hub in the smart-grid network. They say the partnership paves the way for creating gateway infrastructures that can be linked with smart-grid systems. This will increase the footprint of both companies in the field of global connected vehicle services, and help automotive manufacturers worldwide quickly implement EV solutions, creating efficiencies and optimizing the costs of their service operations. Airbiquity has already made great progress in bringing the platform to a wider audience. The relationship with Hitachi also has implications for Ford Motor Company, for whom Hitachi/Clarion is a major manufacturing partner. Ford has implemented the Airbiquity platform as have OnStar and Toyota. All four OEMs have global ambitions for electric vehicles and telematics. Ford, for example, is expected to bring Sync to Europe soon. While several of these relationships are relatively new, it is fair to say that Airbiquity is poised to become the telematics service industry leader in the coming years. It is worth noting, however, how fleeting such leadership can be. It has been just three years since Continental acquired Motorola’s telematics business which at the time included contract manufacturing of the Ford Sync and OnStar modules. Within two years the OnStar business had shifted to LG Electronics and the Sync manufacturing relationship had shifted to Flextronics. But given its relationships with four of the largest car makers in the world, Airbiquity may have finally found  recipe for a more enduring position at the top of the industry. As an emerging low-cost platform for distributing content and services to passenger vehicles, HD Radio technology has been sneaking up on the automotive and consumer electronics industry for about six years. In that brief time, the company has created a minor sensation in spite of the fact that most of the added value elements of the technology have yet to be deployed and tier one suppliers are only now beginning to master the user interface for automotive implementations. Suffice it to say that iBiquity Digital has succeeded in spite of the limitations of early product executions. But the next wave of product promises more dramatic gains as OEMs bring their interfaces up to speed and hardware makers deliver on the enabling technology for conditional access and other value-added services. IBiquity Digital has overcome the classic chicken-and-egg quandary, simultaneously convincing device makers and broadcasters to take a leap of faith and get on board the HD Radio technology express. In the six years since beginning its campaign, iBiquity Digital has recruited thousands of radio stations and their broadcast company parents to add the HD Radio signals, convinced portable and home electronics hardware makers to bring devices to market, and drawn in more than a dozen car makers to add HD Radio technology to their line-fit options portfolios. Today, in the U.S., there are 1,967 stations broadcasting using HD Radio technology in 250 U.S. markets including 197 of the top 200, reaching 247M listeners. In addition, there are 1,128 multicasts, additional stations within the existing HD Radio bandwidth, with nearly equivalent reach. There are dozens of home and aftermarket automotive systems equipped with HD Radio technology – including an iPhone add-on and an integration on the latest Microsoft Zune. Significantly, many if not most of the aftermarket automotive systems include HD Radio technology as standard whereas competing satellite radio capabilities are typically optional. Within the automotive realm, HD Radio technology has rocketed from being available on two brands and seven models (none of them standard) in MY07 to 16 brands and 87 models (34 of them standard fit) in MY10. The outlook is for 19 brands to be offering HD Radio technology on 122 models in 2012 with 65 of those models offering the technology as standard. By now, most people in the electronics industry are painfully familiar with the extended product life cycles and correspondingly slow decision-making in the automotive industry. In this context, iBiquity’s success has extraordinary. The rapid rise, however, has spawned poorly executed user interfaces with inscrutable and non-intuitive designs. (Doubly unfortunate is the fact that some of the poorest HD Radio interfaces are offered in high-end luxury vehicles.) IBiquity provided limited user interface guidance at its inception, but has since taken more of a position in providing suggested device interfaces. Customers are still left to their own preferences, for the most part, though industry participants will be wise to heed any direction from iBiquity. In the end, if customers cannot fathom the interface the added value will be lost. Countries that are characterized by iBiquity as being in testing with advanced interest include Canada, Argentina, Chile, Romania, China, Vietnam, South Korea, Uruguay, Colombia, Poland and the Czech Republic. The company describes several European countries as having a strong interest in the technology. If iBiquity has had this much success with a limited offering delivered in hastily configured packages, one can only imagine the results that await the company as the second and third generation products arrive with added value services and enhanced interfaces. Harman International

Harman announced a return to profitability for its fiscal second quarter in an earnings call earlier this week. In that call, the company detailed its marketing plan which could be taken as a blueprint for the entire industry – particularly the company’s inroads into larger volume mid-segment vehicle categories.

Harman is pursuing emerging market opportunities in China, Brazil and India with local development and manufacturing presence – including a $1B revenue target for China by 2015. The emerging market initiative is reflected also in a targeted shift of engineering/R&D balance from 99% high capital and cost (HCC) markets to 60% HCC, and manufacturing/assembly from 81% HCC to 50% HCC by 2012.

The company expects to maintain its luxury segment leadership while leveraging its previously announced “scalable system” strategy, which has already contributed to a Toyota European design win for MY2011. The scalable system is part of an initiative targeting what Harman sees as a $5B high-growth, mid-segment market opportunity reflecting the company’s desire to capture a broader portfolio of business.

In that regard, Harman wants to pioneer energy-saving GreenEdge technologies for hybrid and electric cars in partnership with Intel and Texas Instruments developing solutions to reduce power consumption by 75% including high efficiency speakers, one of the few objectives the company has yet to realize in the marketplace. Similarly, the company is working with Lotus Engineering on Active Noise Management solutions for hybrid, electric and conventional vehicles to address impending legislation regarding pedestrian safety. Noise management will also apply to in-cabin noise cancellation and reduced weight and CO2 emissions. And Harman is also targeting advanced driver assist systems, an entirely new segment for the company.

In its earnings call the company mentioned winning $2B of additional business, expanding its contract portfolio to $10B, a figure the company claims is the largest in the industry. Included in its current and recently executed order book are:

->     Infinity branded audio systems for next-generation Chrysler SRT series high-performance vehicles;

->     Launch of Mark Levinson premium surround sound for MY10 Lexus GX 460;

->     Launch of JBL premium sound for MY11 Toyota Sienna in U.S.;

->     Launch of Harman Kardon Logic 7 HD system with Range Rover for MY10 mid-model year introduction;

->     Launch of Ferrari 458 Italia equipped with Harman audio and infotainment;

->     Exclusive Haman Kardon sound lounges at BMW brand centers in Munich and Berlin;

->     Press launch of Harman/Lotus Engineering HALOsonic sound synthesis technologies;

->     Selected by BMW for next gen, high-end “Professional infotainment system for all new platforms including BMW, Mini and Rolls Royce;

->     Selected by Daimler for next gen Comand infotainment system for new Mercedes S-Class and C-Class models;

->     Selected by Toyota to provide Harman next gen scalable infotainment for vehicles sold in Europe beginning MY11;

->     Selected by Toyota to provide premium JBL branded audio for 4Runner and Land Cruiser in the U.S., Europe and Middle East and the MY11 Siena in U.S.

All of this contributes to what Harman estimates as 45% global branded automotive audio market share, with Bose at a distant 25%. Harman’s branded audio solutions are used in more than 200 car platforms from 12 OEMs shipping more than 2M audio systems annually. Sources indicate that this 500,000 units/quarter pace is actually approaching 1M units/quarter – a pace that will no doubt be stimulated by the recent Toyota wins and future higher volume segment wins.

The pace of launches has eased somewhat for Harman, which may help explain the return to profitability as profits cusually come later in the program cycle. The company hit a peak of six program launches in FY08, followed by five in FY09. The programs for those years included Mercedes, PSA, Porsche, Audi, BMW, SSangYong, Chrysler and Hyundai. Going forward, Harman says it will have four launches in FY10 (including Audi, Mercedes and BMW (2)), three in FY11 (Toyota, Mercedes and Chrysler) and one in FY12 (BMW), before ramping up again in FY13 with four: Harley-Davidson, Mercedes and BMW (2).

The company further notes the evolution of its infotainment architecture:

Worth noting in the architectural evolution is the growing role of both QNX (CAR Platform) and Intel (Atomm) as well as the onset of Internet connectivity - pioneered by BMW - Blu-Ray, MOST and enhanced navigation features, many of which will revolve around 3D and augmented reality implementations.

Overall, Harman appears to have emerged victorious from its cost cutting regimen with fewer European facilities but with a profitable organization in place pursuing business building initiatives throughout Europe, Asia and the U.S. The most significant business transformation of all, though, will be the Toyota wins. Not even Toyota's recent marketing stumbles can tarnish this achievement and how its will transform Harman's operations and growth profile.

While car makers around the world are developing traditional embedded telematics systems for deployment worldwide, a secondary market in embedded (ie. line fit) and aftermarket modules intended to meet local mandates for eCall, vehicle tracking and road charging are proliferating. Mandates in such diverse locations as The Netherlands and Brazil are feeding this frenzy and new suppliers with new solutions are emerging on the scene on a weekly basis.

 

The six most prominent applications driving demand and interest - among suppliers, car makers and service providers – are pay-as-you-drive insurance (PAYD), the European eCall mandate, the Brazilian stolen vehicle recovery mandate, eHorizon map-as-a-sensor offerings, road charging (The Netherlands, France, Germany) and buy-here-pay-here solutions. Each one of these opportunities represents millions of devices to be sold and installed although, interestingly, the service opportunities are more limited with only PAYD, SVR and buy-here-pay-here promising any service revenue. Road charging in The Netherlands alone represents an 8M unit build with 300K-500K units/annually going forward.

 

PAYD is the highest profile opportunity in the industry today with Octo-Telematics leading the way in Europe with more than 1M installed devices in use. Smaller players are multiplying throughout the continent, though, as insurers recognize the opportunity to take customers from competitors, reward their own “best” customers, and gather better data for determining risk. Progressive is the market leader in the U.S., but with competition fierce in the automotive insurance industry, PAYD will be embraced nationwide. Not coincidentally, Octo-Telematics has partnered with Directed Electronics to tackle the U.S. market.

 

After PAYD, the Brazilian mandate for stolen vehicle tracking and vehicle immobilization has attracted as much attention as PAYD with several companies claiming design-in wins. There were some hiccoughs on the way to achieving a nationwide mandate, but the latest indications are that 100% of vehicles produced in Brazil will be obliged to be fitted with tracking devices enabled for vehicle immobilization. The compromise that allows the mandate to move forward leaves the service provisioning to the customer’s discretion.

 

Road charging, an application already widely deployed in the fleet industry, is coming to passenger cars to reduce emissions, traffic, and accident rates. The volumes for road charging will be significant and suppliers are circling.

 

The eHorizon solutions, in module form, offered by Navteq/Magneti Marelli/ST Microelectronics and lately demonstrated by Intermap/Visteon offer to integrate map and road elevation data into advanced driver assistance applications. The volumes here will grow, but the rate will be slow as consumers gradually come to embrace emerging safety systems.

 

Buy-here-pay-here modules used by both new and used car resellers to track and immobilize customers that miss payments is the most well-established of all the module-related opportunities. Players in the industry have recently coalesced around the Payment Assurance Technology Association (http://www.patassociation.com/index.php) to raise the profile of this vital application as a legitimate segment worthy of attention and respect.
